About this idea
A residential street in Tucker, Samaria Trail is already a very well travelled path. Along with the side street Gloucester, this large circle is walked often, walked by people, walked by dogs and walked by children. It is also an area that sees many bicycles, scooters, roller skates, skateboards and other transportation devices. The Trail, appropriately named, is used by children, families and even the retired and elderly. It is used by friends, joggers, runners, wagon-pullers, sales people, pregnant women, and any combination of these types of trail blazers can be spotted at nearly any time of day or night. Samaria Trail is already a well-worn trail, but it has a problem....
There is truly no safe trail to follow. Walkers and riders are forced to share the road with automobile traffic, office commuters, driving school vehicles, emergency vehicles, taxi cabs, school buses and repair trucks. And, it is this kind of traffic that has residents in the area concerned. The automobile traffic has been increasing in recent years as more and more people are using this area as a "cut-through" between Brockett and Cooledge Roads.
At the same time, the population in the area is getting younger, which means more and more families are moving into the homes that are being vacated by the older generations. As the population becomes younger, so are the walkers and riders that pass by our window every morning on their way to school and every afternoon on their way home and into the evening as they are out to run and play in this very unsafe manner. There are also large storm drains along the road that may be dangerous for new bike riders or small walkers to be too near, as they pose a safety threat as well.
We fear it is only a matter of time before there is a terrible accident. A collision between walker and driver seems to be almost eminent as we have not had that happen, yet, but distracted driving is on the rise and many people who do not live nearby may not realize how many pedestrians this one small area really contains that one needs to look out for.
We want to do something sooner rather than later. We, the neighbors along this route, want to help our county pay for the sidewalks that would be necessary to make our walk/bike path a "real" one so we can help get our community out of the street and onto a safer path for their own good and their own health. We realize that this would put the sidewalks into our lawns, but that is a small price to pay. The county already has easement rights for access to our water lines, and that should be plenty of room for a regular size sidewalk.
So, we just need the signatures of those who live in the area and want to see a sidewalk. Then we will go about the process of helping find the money, either in the county budget ir via donations, Thank you.
