About this project
Long before it became fashionable to close a road for recreation, San Mateo County started Bicycle Sunday. For close to two decades, people have enjoyed car-free activities on scenic Cañada Road. But now, our budget for this and other parks programs is tighter than ever before. In times of tight funding, other parks lose ranger coverage as funds are dedicated to the Bicycle Sunday rangers instead of rangers on the trails in other parks.
Bicycle Sunday provides a safe venue for children and families to enjoy bicycling. More than 60,000 people annually enjoy a safe, beautiful biking, skating or jogging opportunity during the weekly Sunday closures of Cañada Road between Filoli Gardens and Highway 92. It is a popular family biking location, providing a safe place for younger riders to learn biking skills. Bicycle Sunday is also a popular start location for the longer rides enjoyed by experienced riders.
The annual cost of providing Bicycle Sunday is approximately $36,000. The majority of this cost is for three San Mateo County park rangers whose duties include setting-up a safe road closure, maintaining the road closure, stopping any motorists that attempt to drive thru the road closure (which happens every Sunday), and providing information to riders. Rangers are also first responders to medical calls for Bike Sunday. Additional costs include vehicle-related expenses, cones, signs, barricades and medical supplies.
In 2010, the San Mateo County Parks Department investigated establishing a volunteer program to assist the rangers with their duties so that the program could continue. While there were some options identified that would provide technical support, such as fixing flat tires, no viable alternative for replacing rangers was identified.
Therefore, funding for this popular weekly program remains at risk. This project will fund three months (12 Sundays) of the Bicycle Sunday program. Please donate today to help us preserve this treasured community program!
Helpful links on Bicycle Sunday:
How can I be certain that the municipality will use my money for a particular project?
We've got your back! Before any project is posted to Citizinvestor, our partners agree that the money you donate to a specific project will only be used for that project.
Will my credit card be charged if a project doesn't meet 100% of its funding goal?
No! We require that a project be funded in full before any money changes hands. If a project is only 99% pledged once the deadline hits, nobody's credit card gets charged, including yours.
When will my credit card be charged?
Your credit card will be charged the same day in which a project reaches 100% of its funding goal.
Is the money I donate to projects on Citizinvestor tax deductible?
Yes! Under section 170 of the United States. Internal Revenue Code, it states that contributions made to political subdivisions for exclusively public purposes are categorized as charitable contributions. However, with all tax matters, we recommend that you consult a CPA.
Are there any transaction fees included in the project goal amount?
Each project's total cost includes a 3% credit card transaction fee and a 5% fee for Citizinvestor's services. These fees are only paid if the project reaches 100% of its funding goal.
