About this project
Phase one has been funded...let's keep the momentum going and build out phase two of this important project! Thanks to everyone who helped us reach our goal for phase one in just 3 days! With this much support we're excited to keep going and add 18 more racks (plus mounting hardware), bringing us up to 35 racks and parking for 70 bikes.
We are excited for all the support we've received so far and can't wait to get the new bike parking installed this summer. Make your pledge and help to make it happen. Thanks!
Have you ever decided to bike someplace, and then, upon arriving, found there was no safe place to park your bike? Sheldon High School students in Eugene, OR face this problem on a daily basis. While there are a handful of solid, secure racks around the school, these racks fill up quickly and many students are forced to use the old racks, which have been described as “wheel-benders,” instead.
The old racks date from the 1960s and leave the bicycles very vulnerable. The design of the old racks allows only the front wheel of the bicycle to be locked to the rack, enabling thieves to detach the front wheel from the bicycle and steal the rest. This has resulted in a number of recent bike thefts. In addition, the existing racks are a tripping hazard, and if someone bumps into or falls on one of the bicycles, the front wheel of the bike often gets bent. Imagine what it must be like for students who walk out of class to find their wheel bent, or even their bike stolen, and they have no way to get home.
Green Club, a student-led group at Sheldon High School, is working with the school district to raise money to replace these old wheel-bending racks with new “inverted-U” style racks that allow the frame of the bicycle to be securely locked. The project consists of installing 70 new inverted-U style racks, each with a 2-bike capacity, in a covered area in front of the high school.
If the goal is met, the $1,400 raised on Citizinvestor will fund phase 1 of the project, which will install 18 new inverted-U style racks along the southern edge of the covered area.
A donation of $60 will purchase capacity for two bicycles. For $20 we're able to purchase the mounting hardware for a rack..
The video displayed on this page was created by several Green Club students after they went out on a “change drive” to collect money from around the community.
How can I be certain that the municipality will use my money for a particular project?
We've got your back! Before any project is posted to Citizinvestor, our partners agree that the money you donate to a specific project will only be used for that project.
Will my credit card be charged if a project doesn't meet 100% of its funding goal?
No! We require that a project be funded in full before any money changes hands. If a project is only 99% pledged once the deadline hits, nobody's credit card gets charged, including yours.
When will my credit card be charged?
Your credit card will be charged the same day in which a project reaches 100% of its funding goal.
Is the money I donate to projects on Citizinvestor tax deductible?
Yes! Under section 170 of the United States. Internal Revenue Code, it states that contributions made to political subdivisions for exclusively public purposes are categorized as charitable contributions. However, with all tax matters, we recommend that you consult a CPA.
How many phases are there to this project?!
This project was designed as a four phase project to help the us reach some fundraising goals and help improve the parking even if we only reached the first goal.
Reaching phase two will allow us to build out 35 of the 70 racks, which will give us parking for 70 bikes.
Completing all four phases will allow us to totally rebuild our bike parking with new up-to-date racks all around the school, including the covered area in the front and other entrances around the rest of the school.
Having high quality inviting bike parking all over the school will show students that biking is a safe and reasonable transportation choice for getting to school.
